[ARCHIVED] Victims identified in Miami Twp. shooting incident

Police department news release

The Miami Township Police Department continues to investigate a murder/suicide at the Preserve at Sagebrook Apartments that left two dead, and a woman hospitalized. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the shooting suspect as Jovonie L. McClendon, Jr., 33. He was an employee of the United States Postal Service having worked at the USPS branch in Washington Township. McClendon was previously employed with the U.S. Army. Two other shooting victims are identified as Di’eshia Patterson, 27, who remains hospitalized at Kettering Medical Center and her deceased 6-year-old son, Carter L. Clemons.

Officers were called to 3049 Sagebrook Drive on Friday, February 1, 2019, at 11:32 a.m., after McClendon called dispatchers telling them he shot his girlfriend and her son. He proceeded to shoot himself while live on Facebook. At this time, we have not determined a motive for the shooting. The police department has no history of interactions involving McClendon.

Township investigators are working with our federal law enforcement partners as well as the USPS as this investigation continues. Detectives are also conducting a thorough search of social media as well as numerous interviews with family members and friends.
