[ARCHIVED] Miami Township announces the appointment of new police chief

Police Department

Miami Township is fortunate to announce the appointment of Adam Nielsen as Miami Township Police Department chief of police. Nielsen has more than 20-years’ experience in law enforcement, most recently as police commander of the Westminster Police Department in Colorado, a city northwest of Denver. He has an established career demonstrating strong leadership skills and a commitment to safety practices that will benefit the community and the officers and staff under his command.

“I am excited about joining the professional team at Miami Township PD and working alongside them as we continue the traditions of providing law enforcement with service and integrity in mind. I am also committed to serving the community of Miami Township with a vision of community engagement, collaboration, and continuous improvement,” Adam Nielsen said.

Nielsen served with the Westminster Police Department since 2004, having served in many capacities including professional services commander, patrol commander, sergeant of special events and community engagement, and patrol sergeant. In addition, he has held positions as vice/narcotics detective, field training officer and hostage negotiator. He is a valued instructor and holds several advanced certifications in police leadership courses. Neilsen has a master’s degree in criminology from Regis University and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Colorado.

“Nielsen’s vision for the Miami Township Police Department aligns well with our commitment to building strong relationships with residents and promoting transparency. We are confident that his leadership will guide our police officers and staff toward achieving our shared goals of safety and community trust and well-being,” Miami Township Board of Trustees President Terry Posey, Jr. said.

After a nationwide search conducted by Public Sector Search & Consulting, Inc., the Board of Trustees voted unanimously at its Tuesday, March 4, 2025, public business meeting (Resolution #21-2025), to present a formal conditional offer of employment to Adam Nielsen and secure his employment with the Miami Township Police Department. Chief  Nielsen’s official first day will be determined upon completion of necessary employment materials. Join us in welcoming Chief Nielsen to the Miami Township Police Department.
