Leaf Collection

The Public Works Department will provide leaf collection services to residents starting October 24th this year. Leaf collection will continue through the fall as long as the volume of leaves warrants this service. Crews consist of both full-time and contracted temporary staff.

The crews will visit each street in the township once every 10-14 working days or sooner early in the season. During the heaviest stage of leaf fall or times of inclement weather, it is not uncommon to have longer periods between rounds. The department will adjust to a six-day work and/ or ten hour per day work schedule when necessary in order to accelerate the collection process.

Residents are encouraged to mulch the leaves when possible during the fall to supply turf with nutrients necessary for a healthy lawn. Mulching can be accomplished by raising the deck of the mower and installing a blade designed for this activity. It is a free way to fertilize your yard.

To aid crews throughout the process, residents are urged to:

  • Rake or mulch leaves often.
  • Place leaf piles at the back of the curb. Leaves should not be placed in the roadway. Placing leaf piles in the roadway creates a safety hazard and potential liability to the responsible individual(s).
  • Avoid mixing grass clippings (free fertilizer too!), sticks and other debris in with the leaves. Crews will not pick up leaf piles that contain these items.
  • Avoid parking vehicles on or near the leaf piles. Crews report and record all obstacles that hinder the ability to collect leaves by noting the nearest home address.

Notice! If there is very little precipitation throughout the Summer and Fall in the Miami Valley, the leaf collection process will be extremely dusty until adequate rainfall coats the dry leaves. Crews will keep the leaf machine engines turned down to minimum levels and will install a double screen system to reduce the leaf dust.

Weekly Update 10/24/11 (Round 1)
The Public Works Department began the 2011 Leaf Collection Program on October 24th and started in the Huber plat at the northern most section of the Township. Crews completed the Huber plat on October 25th and moved into the Spring Valley plat. After completing the Spring Valley plat on October 27th, crews moved into the Singing Hills plat and completed this plat the following day. Crews finished the week by moving into the Vienna Park plat on October 28th.

Weekly Update 10/31/11 (Round 1)
Leaf Collection crews are now at full strength and started back in Vienna Park to begin the week. Vienna Park was completed on November 1st and crews moved into the Kingswood plat (across from the Dayton Mall and along Mad River Road). Crews completed Kingswood on November 3rd and moved into the Villages of Miami area. 2 crews moved into the Chautauqua plat and on rural roadways on November 4th and a third crew started back in the Huber plat to start the second round of leaf collection. All 3 crews will be back in the Huber plat on November 5th, having completed the first round over the entire Township. Staff will be working Saturday, November 5th to stay within the 10 working day per round schedule.

Weekly Update 11/07/11 (Round 2)
Huber was completed on November 5th. Crews will be starting the week in Spring Valley plat. Spring Valley was completed on November 8th and work began in Singing Hills plat. Crews completed Singing Hills on November 9th and started in Vienna Park. Work continued work in Vienna Park on November 10th, then crews transitioned into the Kingswood plat by noon.

Weekly Update 11/14/11 (Round 2 & 3)
This week should start the largest volume of leaves to be collected for the season. Most of the different tree species have dropped or are in the process of leaf drop. Crews started back in Kingswood plat on November 14th and completed on the 15th. The heavy rains Monday evening will make the collection process more difficult and extend the time necessary to complete this round. Crews moved into the Villages of Miami area on November 16th and completed the plat that day. 2 Crews moved to the rural roadways and Chautauqua plat and the third crew started round 3 in the Huber plat. Crews completed the rural plats on November 17th and then all three crews moved back into the Huber plat for round three of the collection process.

Weekly Update 11/28/11 (Round 4)
Leaf Collection will officially conclude on December 16th. Road crews will be converting the trucks over for snow removal operations and will begin the process of cleaning and inspecting all storm water basins throughout the entire Township.

We wanted to thank all residents that chose mulching their leaves this year and encourage others to consider this option. Mulching supplies the turf with nutrients necessary for a healthy lawn, lowers program expenses, and accelerates the collection process. Mulching can be accomplished by raising the deck of the lawnmower and installing a blade designed for this activity.
