Farmersville West Carrollton Road & Bridge Projects

Due to coordination between the Montgomery County Engineer’s Office, The City of West Carrollton, and the unexpected good weather, the construction for the Farmersville West Carrollton Road and bridge projects have been moved up to February of this year. This will allow the road to reopen in late August instead of September 2012.

The bridge will be closed to traffic beginning February 15, 2012 for six months. Traffic will be rerouted to Soldiers Home Miamisburg Road, W. Sycamore Street (SR 725) in Miamisburg, and West Central Avenue. Signs will be erected notifying drivers of detour route.

Beginning March 3, 2012, Soldiers Home West Carrollton Road will be closed between Farmersville West Carrollton Road and the railroad bridge for reconstruction.  It will be reopened in late August.

Upper River Road will be closed within the City of West Carrollton city limits for a two month period in the summer 2012 for reconstruction.

Questions may directed to the City of West Carrollton.

The Miami Township Police Department will be swearing in their newest law enforcement member on November 22, 2011 at 10:00 AM, during the Trustee’s Meeting, at the Miami Township Administration Building.  Coron, will be the third police canine in the department’s history, but the first in nearly twenty years.  Coron is a one and one/half year old Belgian Malinois and has been trained as a dual purpose police canine.

After much research and consideration, Chief Chris Krug determined that a properly trained and deployed canine would have a direct and successful impact on reducing and solving crime, drug detection, and locating missing persons.  Chief Krug stated “a dog’s olfactory capability to locate hidden contraband, find dangerous hidden suspects, and search for evidence can save officer’s time and exposure to potentially life threatening situations.”

Getting a canine unit started required a thorough understanding of the issues involved and the many options available to the Miami Township Police Department.  Before getting the dog, the Miami Township  Police Department followed “best practices” involved in creating a canine unit.  Following the research, funding and budget process, it was determined that an imported and professionally raised and trained dog from European breeding stock would best serve the police department and Township residents.

Chief Krug presented the Canine Program concept to the Board of Trustees who gave their full support and approved Chief Krug moving forward with the selection of a canine handler.  After a thorough selection process, Officer Doug Hesler was selected as the canine handler.  Officer Hesler brought significant canine handling experience with him when hired by the police department in 2007.  He was a canine handler previously in Perry Township and in New Lebanon, having handled three different police dogs.

Officer Hesler and Coron have spent the past couple of months building a trusting and sound working relationship with each other during a rigorous training program in Columbus, Ohio.  Both handler and canine will participate in monthly training to keep all of their skills honed.  It’s the handler’s job to advocate for his canine and be the ultimate arbiter of whether the canine should be used in any given situation.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine presents the award to Major John DiPietro

The Miami Township Police Department was recognized on August 18 by the Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities for helping provide accessible parking for people with disabilities.

The awards were given by Attorney General Mike DeWine during a ceremony in the Ohio Statehouse Atrium.

In determining the recipients of the awards, the Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities considered the enforcement efforts by the Miami Township Police Department compared with other Ohio law enforcement agencies.

In 2007, Miami Township Police Major John DiPietro developed a special program to ensure enough handicapped parking spots are available around the Dayton Mall, especially during the Christmas holiday season.

“We’ve written more than 500 tickets in the last five years,” said DiPietro. “Typically, the person using a handicapped placard is not the person issued the placard.”

The citations typically result in $275 fines and are filed under state law that requires personal service of the citations on each alleged violator. In some cases, family members used handicapped placards issued to deceased family members, according to Major DiPietro.

Major DiPietro stated that at least one out of every five placards being used belongs to a deceased family member.

Efforts to stop the misuse of the placards are ongoing. Major DiPietro confirmed that Miami Township will continue to seek out those individuals who misuse the placards and issue citations.
