Miami Township works to improve pedestrian safety along busy routes

Plans to improve safety for pedestrians along portions of Lyons Road and State Route 741 will move forward with bid solicitations after the Board of Trustees voted to approve the measure at its meeting Tuesday evening, April 10, 2018.

The $1.9 million enhancement project is a collaborative effort between Miami Township, the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) and the Montgomery County Transportation Improvement District (TID). It is part of an agreement dating from December 2011 that allows for transportation improvements based on need. The local match for the project is generated from the Dayton Mall area Tax Incremental Financing (TIF), revenue that can only be used for infrastructure projects in that specific area. The remaining money comes from a federal grant obtained through the MVRPC.

“The area around Lyons and Byers roads is dense with apartments and homes. A lot of our residents walk along Lyons Road to access the stores along State Route 741,” Trustee President John Morris, said. “We need to construct a pedestrian-friendly walking path for these stretches of roadway to make sure our residents reach their destinations safely. By extending the walkway from Lyons north along the westside of 741, it gives residents better access to the Southland 75 Shopping Center and all the businesses along Kingsridge Drive in the Miami Crossing District.”

Construction is set to begin during the third quarter of 2018 along Lyons Road between Byers Road and State Route 741, and the west side of SR 741 between Lyons and Kingsridge Drive. Improvements include the walkway, curbs and gutters, bridge enhancements, and street paving, that will connect to existing sidewalks along SR 741, allowing for better access to local businesses within the Miami Crossing District.
