Two Miami Township police officers are being assigned as full-time school resource officers. Officer Crystal Rankins is already on duty, splitting her time between Miamisburg Middle School, Jane Chance Elementary and Maddux-Lang Elementary. A second officer to be named will be assigned to Dayton Christian School effective July 1, 2019. The SROs will provide law enforcement, crime prevention education and promote a positive school climate.
“The students open up and talk with me. A lot of them have a special handshake with me. It’s been awesome,” Officer Rankins said. “With having an officer in the school, we can handle all the disputes here, plus if there is an active shooter, God forbid, someone’s already here. I know the floor plans, I can give directions. It keeps the kids more at ease.”
Rankins is the first Miami Township police officer to work full-time as an SRO. Her position is a joint effort between the township and the Miamisburg City Schools. The school district pays 80 percent of Rankins’ salary, while the township pays 20 percent. Miamisburg School Board President Dale Toadvine believes Rankins’ position is a necessary one.
“It helps for students to have a feeling of wellbeing, of safety. I think anytime you have police officer around, even for adults, you have a better feeling of being protected if there were an incident of some kind,” Toadvine said. “I have three grandchildren who go to school there myself. They’re in that building and honestly, it makes me feel better that she’s there.”
Miami Township will also pay 20 percent of the Dayton Christian School’s SRO while the Miamisburg City Schools will pay 80 percent, as it is the fiscal agent for Dayton Christian. The Miami Township Board of Trustees and the Miamisburg City Schools were required to sign off on the SRO program as the three schools are located within township borders. The SRO program is renewable every five years.
