Miami Valley Fire District provides holiday safety checklist

Fire District LogoThe Miami Valley Fire District and Miami Township want you to have a safe and happy holiday. Keep this safety tip list handy, so that you better protect your family and property this holiday season:


Holiday Safety Tips

  • Be sure that all candles are safely away from decorations and other combustible materials. Make sure candles are out before retiring for the evening.
  • Do not leave children unattended in a room with lit candles. Keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach.
  • Do not display lighted candles in windows or near exits in case of the need for a quick escape from your home.
  • Never use candles to decorate a Christmas tree.
  • Use only UL approved Christmas lights when decorating.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets and always unplug the lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Never put lights on a metal Christmas tree.
  • When installing outdoor lights with a ladder, make sure it is properly footed and attended by another person.
  • Decorate with only flame retardant or non-combustible materials.
  • Choose a fresh Christmas tree.
  • Use a Christmas tree stand specifically designed to prevent a tip over.
  • Place your Christmas tree well away from heat sources and exits.
  • Keep your live Christmas tree watered regularly.
  • Do not burn fires in fireplaces where stockings are mounted or hung.
  • When using extension cords, do not run them under rugs, carpets, furniture or across doorways.
  • Make sure extension cords used outdoors are intended for outdoor use.
  • Unplug and do not use any extension cord that is hot to the touch.
  • Do not use any extension cord that has frayed/exposed wiring or a loose/broken plug.
  • Check your smoke detectors regularly to assure they are in working order.
